The only consolation for Dean Cardew’s side after the opening day is that they won’t have to play teams of the calibre of Mousehole every week.

Barnstaple Town made an instant impact in the Western League’s top tier beating visiting Bitton AFC 5-0.

The game came to life when Tor Swann and Billy Tucker scored in quick succession to give Town a two-goal advantage at half time.

Cornwall opener Chris Gibson also made a century but finished on the losing side as Somerset avenged their Showcase defeat at Taunton last season with a seven wickets win at Truro. 

Gibson’s 105 dominated Cornwall’s 255 for eight – only two other batters topped 20 – but Somerset eased home with more than 17 overs to spare thanks to half centuries from Steve Davies, Josh Thomas and James Hildreth.

After a summer of turbulence off the field at Jenkins Park, with some key figures departing, a new-look Millbrook launched their Western League season with a narrow defeat.

A George Mapletoft header in the 61st minute was enough to give promoted Sherborne all three points as Millbrook, with eight Western League debutants, struggled to make an impact.

Six medals were won by University of Bath swimmers – one gold and five silver – on a super Saturday night in the pool on day two of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Ben Proud of the University’s swimming club reclaimed the 50m butterfly title he had won at Glasgow 2014 and sporting scholar Tom Dean took silver in his latest epic 200m freestyle battle with Scotland’s Duncan Scott.
