Berkshire made a strong start to their quest to win the National Counties Championship for a record fifth consecutive time before rain interrupted play on the opening day of their Western Division One match against Wiltshire at Corsham.Wiltshire were struggling on 127 for seven when the weather closed in having opted to bat first after Berkshire’s new ball pair of Tom Nugent and Andy Rishton had done the early damage.

Josh Lincoln will make his debut for Berkshire in their opening match in the defence of their National Counties Championship title against Wiltshire in Western Division One at Corsham on Sunday July 11.The 23-year-old, who plays his club cricket for Slough comes into a Berkshire side that includes his older brother, Dan, but which is missing acting captain Richard Morris and former Middlesex slow left-armer Chris Peploe as they go in search of a record fifth consecutive title.

Holders Berkshire, Devon, Herefordshire, Suffolk and Cheshire all booked their places in the quarter-finals of the National Counties Trophy on a rain-affected final day of group matches.Devon’s six runs (DLS Method) win over Dorset in a cliff-hanger at Dorchester secured them a home quarter-final and decided a tight Group Two in which all five sides started the day with a mathematical chance of progressing.

The remaining five places in the quarter-finals of the National Counties Trophy will be up for grabs in a fascinating final round of group matches today – weather-permitting.Cumbria, Cambridgeshire and Wales NC all qualified for the last eight last weekend. Cumbria and Cambridgeshire, the only unbeaten sides in the competition, will secure home advantage in the quarter-finals on July 18 if they can beat Shropshire at Netherfield and Norfolk at Peterborough respectively.
